This module provides an introduction to the discipline of economics and to the sub-discipline of health economics. Students u will learn basic terms of health economics and understand key principles as well as the type of questions that health economics is concerned with and some of the key concepts that it uses, particularly as applied to health and health care. If you have not studied economics before, this course will introduce many expressions and concepts that may be new to you.
Topics cover the economic mechanisms of health care markets as market failures, supply and demand of health care, resource allocation principles, equity aspects of health care financing and delivery, and micro- and macro-dynamics of health expenditures. Analysis of demand and supply factors of health care expenditure, and methods of sustainable health care financing are discussed briefly.
